MSC and Next Gen Makers announce innovative partnership set to solve the skills gap for engineering firms

Numerous studies report that the engineering skills shortage is one of the main concerns facing British Manufacturing today and yet each year, there are thousands of engineering students that do not secure a career in engineering.

Click to Read

In fact, to address the engineer skills shortage and to keep up with manufacturing demand, UK manufacturers would need to recruit an additional 203,000 skilled engineers each year until 2024, according to a government study.

MSC serve hundreds of businesses everyday and are firmly aware of the challenges their customers are facing in regards to the engineering skills gap. Dave Darby, Managing Director at MSC comments, "To address the engineering skills shortage, we have been strengthening our best in class national engineering team. Our engineering team has saved significant time and costs for hundreds of our customers. That said, we recognise that this can only satisfy part of the problem, which is why we have been searching for a partner that can help our customers recruit and inspire the next generation of engineers. We are now very excited to announce that MSC has formed a partnership with Next Gen Makers".

Next Gen Makers are a new start-up business based in the West Midlands. Their purpose is to address the engineering skills shortage by inspiring the next generation of engineers in colleges and schools in the West Midlands to pursue a career in the sector, then help to place them in manufacturing companies that need to take on engineering apprentices.

'In the West Midlands alone, there is a shortage of 20,000 young engineers every year. Which is very concerning when you consider that there are around 22,000 Engineering and Manufacturing firms in the region.'

The partnership between MSC and Next Gen Makers is all about making a positive change to the lives of many young engineers and engineering firms. Working together, they will address the major problem that faces UK manufacturing today and for years to come.

Find out more about the partnership here.

New HSE Welding Safety Rules

Brand new scientific research has found that exposure to welding fumes can lead to lung and potentially kidney cancer.

Click to Read

Any welding activities carried out without any suitable control measures in place will no longer be permitted by the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Control measures will ultimately depend upon the nature of the activity but can range from Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) to Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE).

All workers who undertake any welding activities, no matter the industry will be affected by these changes. As a result, employers must take the necessary steps to protect their workforce by revising their risk assessments which should take into account new control measures.

Welding fume can cause a variety of illnesses such as;

  • Pneumonia
  • Occupational Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Metal Fume Fever
  • Throat & Lung Irritation

HSE estimates that 40-50 welders are hospitalised per year as a result of inhaling metal fume. These illnesses are easily preventable with additional ventilation, fume extraction or RPE. One of the primary solutions is to minimise fume by designing jobs which require reduced amounts of hot work. Various solutions are recommended which based on the particular job in question.

The choice between extraction and RPE are dependent on a variety of factors. Whichever method of fume reduction is chosen, it will only work if it is conducted in the correct manner. If you require further information on how to protect yourself or your workforce, please contact our Technical and Engineering experts.

MSC's Preparation for Brexit and Beyond

British manufacturing is going through a period of significant change and faces some key challenges.

With an uncertain Brexit deal looming, MSC wanted to share with you what we are doing to prepare ourselves and our customers for the future ahead.

Click to Read

As the only national supplier with a true metalworking heritage and a trusted partner to thousands of UK businesses, MSC works within many manufacturing sectors and is aware of the challenges, expectations and frustrations of the industrial community.

We are seeing many businesses re-evaluate their supply base to ensure that they select and work closely with supply partners that can help them grow through a period of change.

We firmly believe that our business is designed entirely to help manufacturers through this significant period of uncertainty and beyond. Our high service level model is developed to save you time and money relating to unplanned purchases of industrial consumables. This guide is an overview of our commitment to the manufacturing industry.

What we see in the industry

We see a sense of indecision in many manufacturing companies and therefore hesitation. Businesses are unable to invest in opportunities due to perceived high risks and low confidence in trade deals, border controls and tariffs, tax implications and available skilled workforce.

As a result businesses are becoming cautious, with many only investing to fulfil immediate plans, and holding off any longer-term investments until the outcome of Brexit becomes clearer.

We are very aware of the challenges that you face, and are continuing to invest and take steps to ensure that we always deliver the best possible experience to our customers, and remain a business that you can rely on.

What is MSC doing to prepare itself for Brexit?

  • MSC has a dedicated Brexit Readiness Group in place, consisting of its senior leadership team, who are assessing the potential impact of Brexit
  • To mitigate product availability disruptions, we are taking steps to strengthen our supply chain outside of the EU through our US parent company
  • We are in regular consultation with our trusted and strategic partners and suppliers, to ensure our service levels and expectations are always met
  • We have doubled the stock levels for your most popular and production critical products. These preparations ensure that stock-outs do not impact your operations.

How will MSC support its customers?
  • We are continuing our investment in dependable, experienced engineers and technical experts to help improve your manufacturing processes
  • We are dedicated to managing your non-core activities (inventory management, streamlining procurement processes, sourcing products and identifying cost-saving opportunities) so you can focus on your priorities
  • Ensuring reliability is at the forefront of all business activities, such as our delivery and customer service
  • Strengthening our supplier relationships to offer you industry-leading product availability and expert technical advice.

Certainty of supply

Sourcing industrial products should not be your primary concern. Having total confidence in a supplier is more critical now than ever. MSC's suppliers are as committed to maintaining availability levels as we are.

Our strong relations with our suppliers mean that whatever happens, we'll continue to support you with the products you need, when you need them - meaning you can focus on what you do best. At MSC, 97% of all orders are delivered next working day and this will not be impacted by the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. At a time when many of our competitors are destocking to save themselves money, we have decided to increase our stock holding running up to Brexit, to improve upon our existing market-leading product availability and to serve our customers better.

With next working day delivery, you can rely on our quick turnaround of deliveries to ensure you can react quickly to changing circumstances. A supplier should be easy to do business with and get your order right the first time.

Experienced support

The existing engineering skills shortage will possibly be impacted further post-Brexit. As a consequence, we have decided to make additional investment in our customer-facing Engineering Team. Our team of industry-leading qualified Engineers, on the phone and out in the field, are dedicated to supporting you with improving tool performance, taking cost out of your machining processes and saving you time.

We are focused on demonstrating cost control and process improvements, satisfying your customer's expectations and deadlines. Which is why, if you need support with CAD/CAM modelling, troubleshooting unexpected application problems or process improvements, our team of experts are there to help you when you need it most.

Supplier relationships

We hold over 80,000 product lines, available next working day, helping you to reduce the need to hold inventory. We partner with key suppliers who can offer support on their product applications and technical requirements.

MSC is continuing to hold regular conversations with our suppliers to ensure customers have access to a reliable and extensive range of products. Regardless of any changes in border or customs excise procedures, suppliers are safeguarding stock availability as a paramount focus.

For our UK suppliers, there is no risk in the availability of their products.

Whilst a portion of our suppliers hold their stock in EU countries, they have continued to keep us informed of their increased stocking levels and preparations with no known issues foreseen.

Through the support of our US parent company, we are exploring ways to strengthen our supply chain outside of the EU as an alternative source of inventory.

To mitigate any product availability risks, we have increased our stocking levels to accommodate for any unexpected sourcing lead times. Furthermore, our forwarding partners have the expertise to get products through customs as efficiently as possible and do not foresee any issues at this stage.

Trust MSC to deliver

As a rapidly growing, financially stable distributor which invests in itself, reacts to changing market conditions and is supported by a global $3bn parent company, MSC is well placed to manage the challenges of Brexit and deal with its uncertainty. What this means for you is you get a consistent industry-leading service that can be relied upon, a business that won't fail under pressure, and a business that can continue to support the growth of the manufacturing industry.

Certainty From Uncertainty - Manufacturing Outlook 2019

Worries around Brexit and skills shortages in 2019 can be allayed by forming a strong partnership with your suppliers, say MSC Industrial Supply Co.

With a Brexit deal looming, the economic climate is in the most uncertain period it has been in for a long time.

Click to Read

Businesses across the manufacturing sector need to be forward-thinking and ask some searching questions about how to prepare themselves for Brexit, this should include how their supply base will support them through a period of uncertainty. MSC Industrial Supply services thousands of manufacturing companies and is in a unique unbiased position to comment on the current state of UK manufacturing.

There are many challenges facing manufacturers today and whilst they have existed for some time, they have now become more prevalent due to the uncertainty around Brexit.

The key challenges for 2019 are:

Engineering Skills Shortage
This continues to be a problem in the UK, with many school leavers choosing a different career path to engineering, along with an ageing engineering population. Some of our customers fill the skills gap with engineers from the EU. How this will be impacted post-Brexit is not fully understood at this time. As a consequence we have seen many customers look to their supply base to provide engineering support.

Creating certainty in uncertain times
Maintaining a healthy cashflow will be critical as we enter the Brexit period and we are seeing many of our customers drive greater efficiencies throughout their business to reduce costs, save time and get to market faster. To stay ahead of the competition some of our customers are innovating and diversifying their operation, for example by breaking into new markets using existing production capabilities.

To achieve this, they are challenging their suppliers to support them on their journey, in terms of stripping out costs, freeing up time and creating greater stability.

Q: Do you think manufacturers fully understand the impact Brexit could have on their operations?

A: To be honest you would need a crystal ball to really understand the impact of Brexit on manufacturing operations. However, there are some solid assumptions that can be made. Firstly, there is a real potential for interrupted supply from EU countries. Therefore, strengthening your supply chain will be critical. Increasing your stock holding could be one option, the alternative is to rely on your suppliers to hold the stock for you and take on the burden of increased inventory costs.

Supplier relationships are more important now than ever. A deep understanding of your key suppliers is crucial, you should understand their purpose and how they actually add value to your business. Consider the service levels you receive from your current suppliers and question how fast is their delivery service, how often do they let you down, what savings have they demonstrated to you in the past 12 months? This is important for the months leading up to, post Brexit and beyond.

Having suppliers who are Brexit ready, ones who have thought about it and have placed their customer at the heart of their decision-making process, could mean the difference between success and failure. Reaching out to your supply base and testing their readiness for Brexit is a sensible approach right now!

Q: Have manufacturers been guilty of focusing all their attention on Brexit in the past few years and ignoring other potential issues?

A: We are seeing manufacturers do one of two things running up to Brexit. They are either sitting back and waiting to see what happens or they are preparing to deal with the Brexit fallout, whatever that may be.

We are seeing no real evidence that manufacturers are focusing too much attention on Brexit. Worryingly, we are seeing too many small to medium size companies not give it the focus it needs. They are adopting a 'wait and see' approach.

Many manufacturers we speak to are following the latest events but then struggle to translate this into action, resulting in a slowdown of new activities and investments being made, which in turn has meant that many manufacturers have become stagnant in recent months due to the uncertainty of the post-Brexit landscape.

That said, some of the more forward-thinking organisations that we work with have started to put in place robust contingency plans, including an increased reliance on their supply base.

Q: How can MSC support manufacturers in their plans for next year?

A: We believe strongly that our value proposition is designed perfectly to help manufacturers through this major period of uncertainty and beyond. Our high service level model is designed to save time and money relating to unplanned purchases of industrial consumables.

We hold over 80,000 product lines, available next working day, helping our customers reduce the need to hold inventory. We will increase our stock holding over the Brexit period so our customers will not have to. We have access to thousands of additional products through our extensive supply base. We partner with over 550 key suppliers who also support our customers with their product and technical needs.

We are acutely aware of the engineering skills shortage, which is why we have expanded our dedicated engineering team, some of the best within the industry! We are helping our customers streamline their production processes, saving them time and reducing significant costs. We are helping our customers diversify their operations, providing advice and guidance relating to machine tooling.

Our innovative inventory management vending solution is designed to reduce concerns over line side stock outs. It removes the need for our customers to worry about the management of their engineering consumable items during a time where they should be focused on more critical issues.

We are Brexit-ready. We understand manufacturing - it's our heartland. Our success is driven by the success of our customers. We strive to be part of the solution and not part of the problem!

Q: What should manufacturers be looking to do in the coming months leading up to Brexit?

A: Based on the best practice that we are seeing across thousands of manufacturers we would advise the following:

  • Where feasible develop contingency plans for the various potential outcomes of Brexit.
  • Review the efficiency of your operation: are you ready for a potential change in approach, are you able to quickly adapt to whatever Brexit brings?
  • If possible seek opportunities to expand into new markets, spreading the risk. Innovate to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Partner with suppliers that can help you navigate through these uncertain times.
  • Work with suppliers that can drive your growth, suppliers that can free you up to focus on the issues that will inevitably come along with Brexit.

People will look for trusted partners and suppliers who are part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Instead of leading with a solution we lead to a solution that is tailored to our customer needs."

We asked Ulrich how he achieves excellence, "I personally train throughout the season as well as during the closed season to keep up my fitness level. To be at the top of our game, our bikes must be well maintained and serviced. I look after my Danish bikes and to concentrate on racing, I'm lucky to have a mechanic in England that looks after everything for me. To be successful you need good people around you, I owe my success to them as well. We win and lose as a team."

With our market-leading customer service Ulrich highlights how, "Everyone at MSC has been so supportive and friendly, the advice and recommendations from staff means you know you're always going to get the best products available."

Speedway is motorsport in its rawest form, on a 500cc motorbike which has no brakes, only one gear, a throttle and a clutch. It is vital Ulrich has a supplier he can trust to ensure his safety and his bikes are in the best possible condition for those all-important races. MSC has supplied Team Østergaard with all their workshop and race day lubricants as well as their race day toolbox which has made such a huge difference. Ulrich comments, "When you're trying to be the best you can it's important to have the best suppliers onboard. Both MSC and Team Østergaard are aiming to push the boundaries of engineering. At MSC we provide expert technical advice on all our products and services, Team Østergaard are using these as part of their winning formula for success.

Driven to succeed Ulrich reflects on his Speedway journey and shares his advice to achieving your goals, "Don't be afraid to ask for help as that's the only way to learn. Laura Millard, Corporate Engagement Officer, Mary Stevens Hospice Group explains: "The reality is that our care simply isn't possible without the support of our business community, and to have a company as respected and influential as MSC Industrial Supply committing to helping local families really is just the most amazing way to start 2018. We're delighted to be working closely with them and feel very privileged that this fantastic relationship will continue."

At MSC we are committed to investing in the Hospice and have a variety of activities planned across the year which include; awareness days, in-house fundraising activities, volunteering visits by associates to the Hospice, to help with the day-to-day running and delivery of the charity's events calendar.

First on the agenda for 2018 was the Hospice's 'Christmas Treecycle' which saw in exchange for a Hospice donation MSC associates travelling around the Black Country collecting Christmas trees to be recycled. As a leading industrial supply company, we wanted to offer not only our time but also our top-quality gardening gloves, saws and a van to make life easier for all the Hospice volunteers.

Penny Davies, Human Resource Director, comments how: "Having Mary Stevens Hospice as our Charity of the Year is a great pleasure and honour for MSC. As a business we strive to transform how our customer's businesses operate through being personally invested and offering support wherever possible. That is why working in partnership with Mary Stevens Hospice resonates so much for the associates of MSC, as we see in them their drive and commitment to helping patients and families. MSC will do anything we can to raise awareness and funds for such an important and instrumental support service in our society."

With over £1000 already raised going towards the amazing work the Hospice does for patients as well as their family and friends, we look forward to continuing this close relationship throughout the year.
