Grinding Machine FAQs

What is the difference between a surface grind and a cylindrical grinder?

Surface grinders are designed for flat or square parts, and the workpiece is usually held on a magnetic chuck and moved back and forth under a horizontal grinding wheel.

Whereas a cylindrical grinder is designed for round or tapered parts and the workpiece rotates between centres, while a grinding wheel creates the outer diameter or inner diameter.

How do I cool my grinding machine?

Industrial grinding machines generate intense heat, so to prevent warping the metal, you need a robust cooling system.

Use flood coolant to cool the grinding machine and magnetic separators that pull metallic "swarf" out of the coolant before it gets pumped back onto the part.

Paper filteration is also recommended if you need a mirro-like surface finish as the paper removes even non-metallic grit from the fluid.

Should I choose a manual, NC, or full CNC grinder?

This depends on whether you want volume or variety.

Manual grinding machines are best for repair shops or one-off sharpenings, where you want to feel the cut. 

A numerical control (NC) is a great middle ground, giving you semi-automation with flat grinding without the cost of a full CNC.

A computer numerically controlled (CNC) grinding machine is necessary for complex profiles or high-volume production, but can be expensive.
